Waitlisting

Waitlist provides many advantages to students, instructors, and administrators. The biggest advantage to students is that they are notified when a seat becomes available on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the registration cycle, until the 5th day of the semester.

Waitlist is advantageous to instructors and students by eliminating add cards for full classes until the fourth day of the semester. Waitlist is helpful to administrators by allowing them to track the demand for certain courses and better manage curriculum offerings.

How does a Waitlist work?

Students who attempt to register for a class that is full may put themselves on a waitlist on a first-come, first-served basis. When an open seat becomes available, an e-mail is sent to the student at the top of the waitlist. The e-mail will state the deadline for going online and adding the class.

The seat is reserved for that student only to login and register during the timeframe stated on the e-mail. Waitlists and deadlines work daily (24/7), even weekends and holidays.

If the student does not respond before the deadline they are dropped from the waitlist and the seat will be automatically offered to the next student on the waitlist.

Prerequisite and Corequisites for the Waitlist

Students must have an active email account because the waitlist notifications will be sent to that email address only. Students must meet all of the prerequisites and requirements for the course to sign up for the waitlist.

How do I sign up for a waitlist?

When you attempt to register online for a class that is full, a registration “add” error appears. To fix the “error,” select the drop down box under “Action” to be added to the waitlist. Remember to check your student email everyday (including weekends and holidays) for your waitlist notification. If you experience problems, contact the Registration Office via e-mail at records@utahtech.edu.

Is there a way for me to see where I am on a waitlist?

  1. Log in to your myUT. Click on the Student Tab and then Registration.
  2. Click the red button, Continue to Registration and then Register for classes. If it asks to Select a Term, select the semester the waitlisted class is in, and click Continue.
  3. This will bring up three different views select Schedule Details in the bottom left portion of the screen.
  4. From the list of courses, find the one that says Waitlisted, which will be highlighted in green.
  5. When you find the waitlisted course, click on the gray arrow next to the name of the course. The name of the course is in blue and underlined.
  6. After the gray arrow is clicked, a message box will dropdown. In the message, you will find your Waitlist Position.

What happens if I don’t register for a course within the deadline in the email notification?

If you do not register before the deadline stated in the e-mail, you will automatically be dropped from the waitlist. The next student on the wait list will then move to the top of the list. Remember to check your student email at least once every day to ensure that you do not miss a notification. If you are close to the top of the waitlist, it is highly recommended that you check your email twice a day, once in the morning and again in the evening.

May I get on the waitlist for more than one section of the same course?

Yes, you may add yourself to the waitlist of more than one section of a course. The system will allow you to stay in your current section and also get on the waiting list for additional sections of the course. If you are notified via your student email that a seat is now available in a different section, you must use the Add/Drop screen to simultaneously add the new section and drop the old one in one transaction. DO NOT press Enter until you have input the course numbers (CRNs) for both sections! If you do not follow this process you will lose any attached co-requisites ( i.e., if you are switching labs, you will lose the lecture).

As a courtesy to others, please take yourself off of any waitlists for classes or sections that you do not intend to take.

May I get on the waitlist for a class that has a time conflict with another course?

Yes, you may add to the waitlists of courses that have time conflicts with courses for which you are registered or with other waitlisted courses. If you are notified via your student email that a seat is available for a waitlisted class, you must drop any course for which you are registered that has a time conflict, before you register for the waitlisted course.

At what point does a waitlist stop working?

All waitlists will be discontinued at midnight on the 5th day of class. Starting on the 6th day of class, an instructor’s signature is required to add a course.

I received a waitlist e-mail, but when I tried to register I couldn’t because of a registration hold. What should I do?

All registration holds must be cleared prior to any registration activity (this includes waitlisted classes). Types of holds: Past Due Balance, Advisor, Orientation, Library Fines, Parking Fine, etc. Always check your hold status before registering.

I accidentally dropped my waitlisted class. How do I get back in the class?

As long as you are still within the time limit on the e-mail, you can add the class by going to the Add or Drop Classes screen in myUT. To do this, enter the CRN to the Add Classes Worksheet and click on submit changes to register for the class. If it is past the time limit on the e-mail, you will need to start over by putting yourself back on the waitlist.
